CPP President Hun Sen Meets with Mr. Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune, President of the Lao National Development Front

Phnom Penh: On the morning of Friday, October 18, 2024, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate and President of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), welcomed Mr. Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune, President of the Lao National Development Front, for a courtesy call at the 7 Makara Palace in Phnom Penh. The meeting aimed to strengthen the ties between the two parties and enhance cooperation between Cambodia and Laos.

Hun Sen began the meeting by congratulating the Lao People's Democratic Republic on the successful hosting of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits held the previous week. He also commended the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Lao National Development Front and the Cambodian National Salvation United Front, covering the years 2024-2028.

In response, Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune expressed his gratitude for Hun Sen’s warm hospitality. He acknowledged Hun Sen's prominent leadership role in Cambodia, Laos, and ASEAN, and praised his efforts in unifying Cambodia and transitioning the country toward a multi-party system under a single government.

During their discussions, Khoutphaythoune conveyed warm greetings from Thongloun Sisoulit, President and Secretary General of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. He thanked Hun Sen and Cambodian leaders for their participation in the ASEAN Summit held in Vientiane. Khoutphaythoune highlighted the enduring historical ties and achievements shared between the fronts of both nations, particularly emphasizing the eight key points of the recently signed MoU, which reinforces their commitment to a long-standing and strategic partnership.

Khoutphaythoune expressed a desire to learn from Hun Sen's extensive experience in leading Cambodia toward peace and development. He underscored the importance of effective leadership strategies and sought Hun Sen’s recommendations to guide the Lao National Development Front, especially in training the next generation of leaders.

In response, Hun Sen reflected on the development of bilateral relations over the past 68 years and reiterated his commitment to fostering strong, mutually beneficial ties in the future. He noted the upcoming 70th anniversary of Cambodia-Laos relations in two years and shared insights into the establishment of the United Front for the Development of the Motherland, created after the formation of the Cambodian National Salvation Armed Forces in 1978.

Hun Sen affirmed the comprehensive and long-term strategic partnership between Cambodia and Laos, highlighting collaboration in various sectors, including government relations, trade, and energy. He emphasized the importance of ongoing energy cooperation, particularly in purchasing electricity from Laos to support domestic needs and facilitate exports to Singapore.

Khoutphaythoune expressed his sincere appreciation for Hun Sen’s valuable insights and committed to upholding the principles of solidarity and collaboration as a cherished legacy for future generations. He also congratulated Cambodia on its rapid urban development and the effective management of cities, indicating plans for a visit to Sihanoukville soon.
